Time can be easily marked by the change of sun rising and sunset. Sunrise becomes as s a sign of staring of the day and sunset becomes as a sign of end of the day. Life is marked by time. Daytime is undisputed determined as work time since the sunrise gives the brightness and vitality. Nighttime is the time for break as it is dark and quiet.
In this video, I chose to record the duration from the period of sunset to midnight. I compressed the whole night into 4 minutes. As time passed by, the camera recorded the changes of natural light from bright to dark, the changes of electric lights in human’ s life and what happened on the street. It also recorded the activities of people from the neighbor building, and the activity of people behind the camera. Each unit is different and life behind each window is different. All windows are like various screens that show different movies. People may spend two hours for a movie but the frame of two hours can be changed in one second in this video. We always ignore the slight changes of time and the change of time sounds very virtual to record. The activities on the street and in the apartment perform as a way of present the passing of time. In this over-consumptive world, everything that is being consumed seemed like also a consumption of time. The movements of life-beings give a representation of consuming time. I choose to use the natural sound from everyday life including the sound of cooking, moving staffs, open doors, and walking. I compress and speed up the audio to make it sound doleful and flight.
