Gesture - "All for Sale"
Description
Life today exists against a backdrop of disposable packaging and messages about consumption. The self is suspended between the natural and the artificial, especially in relation to consumption and materialism. Food is a curious part of human life tightly. The figure acts as seller, buyer and also product that draw to the aspect of capitalism. People’s behaviors are controlled and affected by production, profits, wealth and property. With gestures of walking, browsing, chewing and sitting, I placed myself as a consumer, a seller and a product that being sold. Buyers walk in the market and chew inside the food counter to express the desire of food. In each different scene, I am doing something different. Wrapping is used as a process of showing the role of being products. Plastic foil is used as a symbol to present plastic grocery bags. The form of each wrapping body is different to show the variety of products in the market. There is no figure in the original fragments of background; instead, figures were added to the background. Videos of body gestures were shot in green room and keyer effect was largely processed while editing. Most of the audios were recorded outside with the sound of people walking, cars passing by and communicating between buyer and seller. Some other sound resources of falling into water, water bubbling and jumping down to the ground were emphasized to draw audiences’ attention. These sounds also perform as signals of changing scenes. The ending of the video has the same scene with the beginning and fragments start to disappear. This part aims to show that the experience in the market comes to an end.
